Porchetta!
Like I said, a banner snack weekend. On Sunday, we had lunch at our favorite place for florence-style porchetta in the East Vil…the aptly named Porchetta. We were lucky to snag two of the very few precious seats in the joint. Last time we were there, we ordered the plate which was very good (it included potatoes with burnt ends!). But this time we both went for the sandwich.  And the...

Shabu Shabu!
Last weekend was a banner weekend for delicious food eating. On Friday night, we decided to finally try Shabu-Tatsu in the East Vil for traditional Shabu Shabu. That’s where there is a pot of boiling water in the center of the table. They bring you a platter of thinly sliced raw beef and a giant plate of vegetables, tofu and noodles and you get to cook your own snacks. You’re also...

a new year's in seattle with the Dundi.
Husband, dog and I spent the final two days of our holiday vacation doing what we try to do every year: Toast to the New Year with the Dundi in Seattle. We have traditionally spent New Year’s with Brad and Nicole since something like 2003ish. There’s been a few years where we didn’t make it because we had moved back to portland for a spell, but usually we’ve been together...

pdx-mas: the final chapter.
I think I’m finally done recapping christmas in portland. Phew! I’ve been busy shooting a ton at work and when I’m not working, I’m just trying to soak in every moment. Capturing more things in my mind and heart than in my memory card.  But one thing I did capture in the digital world is that I am the Foursquare* mayor. THE MAYOR. Of my best friend’s house in...

pdx-mas: la goon lagoon chapter.
So, one of husband’s friends in portland, Collin, has recently transformed his basement into a tiki bar. It’s classy, grown-up and perfect and we got the chance to sip a tropical drink there while we were in portland for the holidays. He calls all his buddies “goons”, so he named his bar “La Goon Lagoon”.  Here is Collin the bartender.  My favorite thing in...

residual nyc holiday cheer.
We made a point this year to go see the tree at Rockefeller center, which also happens to be just a block from where I work.  The Sorrells joined us. And so did A. Coll! We walked past the pretty holiday window settings, watched the snowflake projection on the side of the Macy’s building and gazed down at the ice skaters. We even saw a marriage proposal happen right in the center of...

amy, my little manhattan miracle.
It just needs to be said how happy and grateful I am that my friend A. Coll from portland moved here last year. We danced in a hip hop performance troupe called “Sauce” (headed up by best friend Evie) some five years ago. And 2010, being the salty-sweet tidal wave of goodness that it was, brought this shiny pearl back into my life. Thank you, 2010!  It’s quite a luxury living in...

pdx-mas: little monsters chapter.
Mindy’s Milo has his birthday every year right after Christmas. Now, I know this birthday timing is supposed to suck. But what does not suck is how I get to be at his birthday party every year. Guaranteed! Who’s the best auntie ever? All the way from new york! (ha) I love having the chance to see all the kids in their element and enjoy all of the cute touches that Mindy always...

pdx-mas: little kid on christmas morning chapter.
Did you know our first born actually opens his own presents? True story. Santa brought him two new toys: “salmon” and “duck” (not pictured). The kid loves fish-theme’d toys and poultry theme’d toys ONLY. But he would never turn down a USDA approved cut of meat given by his grandma! (a toy aptly named “meat”) It was a good, good year for...

pdx-mas: the my-dad's-side-'o-the-family chapter.
Christmas Eve this year was spent in a party room where my Grandma lives with my immediate family, my dad’s two brothers and sister and their spouses and kids and their kids kids and so on. We ate a pot luck dinner and watched the little ones open some gifts. One of the very few drawbacks of living in The Best City is that it takes me away from being a part of my family’s daily lives....

day-after-christmas lobster tradition.
The tradition lives! But**spoiler alert**the lobsters do not. For the, like, fifth year in a row chef MIL treated Husband and I to a homemade lobster tail dinner the day after Christmas. This year was by far the best yet because it involved literally all of my favorite things.  -Lobster (obvs) -Bowl’ O Butter (also obvs) -Pasta w/spinach, parsley, basil, green onion, some olive oil and...

pdx-mas: the girl's night chapter
As always, we spent most of our two week holiday in portland. First up on my dance card? Uh, my dancers, of course. Saturday night, my best girls and I had an old school portland dinner of tapas at festive Oba in the Pearl. Then we met up with some more lady friends at an improv theater that shall not be named because we left halfway through and I don’t want to name names and bad mouth. I...

coulter holiday card.
This year, we decided that the perfect punctuation to Two Thousand and Get-our-shit-together would be to send out a holiday card. It’s something that we’ve been wanting to do for a couple (nine) years, so we felt pretty proud of ourselves that we made it happen. Because nothing says we’re at least sorta close to having our shit together like a good old fashioned holiday card. We...

todos santos, puebla magico!
Thanksgiving this past year was spent feeling thankful for family, good food, a hot sun and a salty ocean in Todos Santos, Mexico. We flew into Cabo and spent the first night in old town San Jose Del Cabo. We had some dinner at the cute hotel we stayed in, explored the town center and tried to get on Mexico time. The following day, we drove the couple of hours up the baja to Todos Santos. ...

everything is small.
As seen next to my desk inside my office. As given to me by a certain equally small ginger friend who officially and ironically lives in portland now.  Missing you, Laddie!

Been there, ate pizza, watched a lightening storm over the park, drank wine, done that. *Ruffle socks with heels!
